Artist's Statement
My figures in bronze are of the lost wax process. I work by pouring hot wax into sheets that I tear and form, modeling the warm wax with my hands and joining the pieces to form a suggestive torso. All the pices are unique and originals, stamped with my seal, mounted on a brass base, patinaed and waxed to protect the finishes.
The torsos are inspired by a variety of different sensibilities. They correspond to the suggestive nature of Japanese brushwork, forms appearing in the light and reflecting a body in movement. Yet the concave surfaces of the interior spaces were inspired by a greek bronze of a crouching Venus at the Getty Foundation in Malibu. Eroded by time and the corrosive nature of the sea, the missing surfaces revealed the negative space and surface within the figure. This interest generated a series of torsos that I continue today. |I studied Indian Sculpture at the Musee Guimet in Paris and my love of the Nataraja sculptures of India and their dancing attitude is also apparent in these figures
My torsos are balanced in a delicate equilibrium between positive and negative forms where the intimacy of the interior reflects the immensity of the abyss.
